Musings: Producers | Style

Most people hear music in terms of style. This
is why style is the primary marketing factor. And
then it gets worse…
Everybody hates every style except the one they're
into. Tolerance? Appreciation? Are you kidding?
Potential clients often ask me the highly baited
question: "What kind of music do you
like?" I learned how to answer that question
years ago. I say, "The same kind you like,"
and then, moving in for the kill, they say, "What
kind of music is that?" And I say, "my
own." Then they say something like, "I'm
gonna go get a cup of coffee."
I always said, "If my customers were all
here at once they would probably kill each other."
Fortunately for me, although style is a strong force,
the power of music is stronger. I record
and understand a lot of styles, but the things that
make music "go" are pretty much the same
in all styles. So don't get nervous if some of my
clients play music that is not your style. It is
possible for a person like me to focus on the power
of music, no matter where it comes from.
